Favorite Quotes by Martin Luther King

Martin Luther Kind was assassinated a week after I was born. My parents were probably still in the midst of their joy with me, their first born, when they heard of it, and I wonder the mixed feelings they must have felt about the world their newborn was inheriting. Today, I have my own child and wonder the same.

With schools and many other institutions closed on this third Monday of January marking Rev. Martin Luther King's birthday, I sit at home and reflect on many of his speeches, and I am inspired. Here are a few of my favorite quotes by Rev. Martin Luther King:

"Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles;
Cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances.
Courage breeds creativity; Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it.
Cowardice asks the question, is it safe?
Expediency ask the question, is it politic?
Vanity asks the question, is it popular?
But conscience ask the question, is it right? And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right."

"Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men." -- From 1963's "Strength to Love"
